Paint primer: why apply or not to apply?

It often starts with an idea: a new colour on the wall. A visit to the store and you are good to go. But first things first, make sure you prepare well, for example a paint primer!

Terracotta WallPrim Pro Casa Krullenbol Pure & Original

What is a paint primer?

A primer ensures good adhesion between the substrate and the paint. For example, a mineral paint always needs a primer that builds a bridge between a (synthetic) substrate and the mineral lime paint. In order to deliver the paint result as attractively as possible, a corresponding primer is therefore almost always recommended.

In addition, a primer makes the surface suitable for applying a paint on it. For example, if the surface is porous, or if it is very absorbent, a fixation or a primer can prepare the surface for the use of a paint. In this way, WallPrim Pro reduces the absorption of the substrate, so that you need less paint for the finish and you realize a better end result.

Pure & Original primer or other brand?

Pure & Original’s primers and paints are designed to be used together. After a long time of testing and development, we know that WallPrim Pro gives the best result in combination with Fresco lime paint. Of course, this also applies to the other paint types.

If you choose a primer from another brand, it is impossible to say what the result will be. That is why we recommend: use products that are coordinated with each other. It would be a shame if the result was disappointing because you used a primer that you happened to still have, but the paint doesn’t stick to the wall…

When do you use a primer?

You use a primer when this is recommended in the technical data sheet of the product to be used. It can differ per paint type or surface whether or not you should use a primer.

What paint primer do i need?

You use the primer that is recommended in the technical data sheet of the product to be used. It can differ per paint type or surface which primer should be used.

Primer or multiprimer

… are all layers that you put on between the substrate and the paint. In fact, they do the same thing: they provide good adhesion between the substrate and the paint. As soon as you can also apply it to other surfaces then wood such as plastic or metal, it is called a primer. As soon as it can be applied to even more substrates, it is called a multiprimer.

The terms are used very often interchangeably. To keep it clear, we call all these products primers.

Coloured paint primer

Pure & Original primers are often available by colour in addition to white (White colour). This way you can already apply the primer in the colour you have chosen for the finish.

The advantage of  coloured primer is that you work with colour layer construction. The more layers of colour you apply, the deeper and fuller the colour becomes.
Why should you choose a white primer? When you start working with different colours and you need the same primer for everything, it can be useful to opt for a white primer, especially if they are all small walls or colour areas.
