Immersion in colour

Immersion in colour

Upside Down was pretty much the right expression when I saw the new Colour Collection Upside Down from Pure & Original. The colour combinations in this collection inspired me so much that I formulated a new 2020 colour target for my interior: no more white walls and the ceilings are also participating! The Danish Summer House is immersed in colour from top to bottom this year, starting with the kitchen.

Upside down make-over

Our black kitchen has so far not really participated in the colours of my interior. It was a black and white whole with some colour here and there through accessories. The perfect space for my Upside Down project. The kitchen has a level difference in the ceiling. Where a suspended ceiling usually provides a cozy feeling, this is not so bad for us. The large windows, the white ceiling and the white walls and floor gave the kitchen a sleek and modern look. This atmosphere is not reflected in the rest of our interior and that caused an imbalance. It was therefore high time for a Pure & Original Upside Down metamorphosis with two colours from this Colour Collection: Old Ocre and Polar BluePolar Blue.

Combine two worlds

Seemingly contradictory colours, the warm Old OcreOld Ocre and the cool Polar blue. It is like combining two worlds; African warmth with the cold Antarctica. I first made a mood board of these two colours and saw how beautifully these colours complement each other.

My starting point was a sunny and warm colour on the ceiling: always summer in the kitchen of the Danish summer house! The fact that this makes the suspended ceiling darker than the wall may not be the first choice of an interior stylist. A dark ceiling can make a room appear lower. And yet I went for it! I just love colouring outside the lines and I knew I got away with the light and the southern location of the kitchen. Another goal was to create more connection with the rest of the interior by applying colour. Usually I choose deep colours, but now I wanted to experiment with a lighter colour; it became Polar BlueBlue.

Types of paint

And then back to my colour goals for this year: no wall white and the ceilings are included. I dipped all the walls including the door in the kitchen in Polar Blue. I used two types of paint from Pure & Original: Traditional paint Egg Shell and Licetto. The first is a matte lacquer that I applied to the door and frame. These were already primed and I only had to sand and wipe lightly beforehand. Then the painting went almost automatically, because this is really a very fine lacquer to paint with. I painted the door twice for good coverage and protection.

The plan was to paint the wall in the removable wall paint Licetto, and then apply another strip of Traditional paint Egg Shell at splash height. Removable paint is indispensable in a kitchen, especially if the walls are not tiled like ours. After the wall was cleared of holes, we sanded it lightly to remove all irregularities. This also ensures good adhesion of the paint. After the first coat of Licetto wall paint, we finally decided to give the entire wall a coat of Traditional paint Egg Shell instead of just at splash height. As a result, the entire wall is now splash-proof and has a very light shine.

What I found most exciting about the project was painting the ceiling. For the first time in my life I gave a ceiling a different colour than white! We used the matte Classico paint from Pure & Original, in the color Old OcreOcre. This paint is ideal for ceilings. On the white base, we applied two layers of Classico for good coverage.

Kleur in je interieur

I think the end result is really stunning! The minimalist and sleek has remained, but the kitchen has so much more atmosphere and now fits into the bigger picture. In addition, due to the colours, this space needs little extra, a single accessory is enough.

If you also opt for more colour in your interior, then in my opinion you choose the paint from Pure & Original. I have been working with this wonderful company for some time. The paint contains only natural colour pigments and you can see that; the colours are richer and deeper than traditional paints made from synthetic color pigments. Once you get acquainted with the paint products of Pure & Original, you will never want anything else. I am already looking forward to a next collaboration project and already have an eye on it…
